Obstacles

The obstacles we encounter almost everyday and is up to us, how we use as a barrier. Whether fallen tree in the woods, or a bale of hay in a field, or a specially made obstacles kennel clubs. To overcome them we use the command "forward" and "back" and train starting at the moment the puppy is habitual to his name, trust us. Obstacles must answer, however the size and age of the dog and its physiological readiness to overcome obstacles.

Obstacles can be overcome by climbing or jumping, with or without dummies. The basic obstacles is the beam, inclined and flat wall, ladder and pit. We also find their analogues or special barriers, whether of the elements of agility, or already mentioned natural obstacles, tunnels and the like. We should not focus on the monotony of basic barriers, but offer most types of dog barriers.

Examples of barriers and training to deal with these
Overcoming low beam

The exercise begins with the basic stance against a rise plate obstacles. Give the dog the command "forward" and show the start-up board. With guidance and dog snack we lead the on the board, carefully so the dog don´t fall down. If your dog has a tendency to jump an obstacle, use the command "slow", and instead of pulling it forward slow him down with leash. Dog constantly praise and encourage, by fast running on the obstacle slow down. Performance should be on a straight-line pace. The dog has run out for the start-up board, go on beam, on the other side gets the command "back" where he turns around and back up again. Proper execution is when the dog goes to command calmly and courageously for balance beam and placed back to the handler.

With increasing demands on the dog, can be incorporated into practice other exercises - stop on balance beam, sit, lie and so on.

The aim of exercise is that the dog alone knew alone overcome obstacles, such as the space spanned by plate or trunk of the tree. Beam width should not be less than 15cm.

The beam has a variety of sizes and angles of begin and we should start from the smallest and forge to the high balance beam, which has a running-board instead of a ladder with an angle up to 45 degrees. It is essential, that the dog had mastered the low beam. The beam is high, is the highest point of 2m and a ladder can be the subject of fear for the dog. We assured him and help him to tread on the rungs. It is important that the dog don´t jump down from beam, but steps on each spot. (Photo High beam: wolfdog.org).

High jump

The aim of exercise is to teach the dog to overcome the obstacle itself up to 2 meters. There are two types of jumps - jump up to 1 meter high and climb to a height of 2 meters. At the beginning of training begin with lower barriers, about 30 to 40cm. Face up to the barrier around one or two steps away. Dog hold on the end of leash, so when he jumps we accidentally don´t stop him. We give the command "forward" and show the obstacle. Quickly stepped forward and attract the dog with us. On the other side, give the command "back". If the amount is less, we can overcome the with dog. Praise and reward the dog. Use leash to guide guide the dog, we pull him up to overcome obstacles without touching. Without touching should the dog overcome height of one meter.

Proper exercise is follows: the dog and handler stay before the barrier, 100cm high. The dog is unbelted. The handler gives the command "forward" dog runs up to an obstacle, overcome it and jump as soon as it touches the other side of the earth, receives the command "back". Dog overcome obstacle and sit down before handler. On command the dog goes to the leg of handler.

Aport with jump

The practice can proceed only when a dog can bring subjects - aport and can by  command overcome an obstacle by jumping. Exercise is as follows: handler stays with unbelted dog before barrier. The handler throws aport behind barrier not too far. Dog doesn´t start without command. The handler gives the command "aport forward" and dog runs out to the obstacle, overcome it, grasp the aport without biting on or playing with it. Once the dog has the aport gets the command "back" and goes through the barrier to the handler and sit down before him. While the handler leaves the dog sit and wait, is commanded to "let go." The dog must retrieve voluntarily and willingly the aport. On command goes to the handlers leg (photo: wolfdog.org). Do not forget to praise the dog also in the later stages of training.

Jump with climbing over an inclined wall (A)

As with any obstacle, begin with the puppy carefully and whole the time make him secure by climbing an obstacle. We encourage him verbally and with treat. Begin in the basic attitude and give the command "forward". Dog runs against obstacle, we go at the left side and dog is forced to climb it. When he overcomes an obstacle, turn by the command "back" and procedure is repeated. Since puppies do not require precision we are carefully on its physiological capabilities.

Height and steepness of the walls - boards may vary. By overcome boards keep an eye on that the dog doesn´t hurt. Even at start of training, begin from a height that the dog had climb and does not jump over a barrier. Best suited for training is height about 150cm. In practice of jumping dog needs space to jump. In the climbing training we short the distance to overcome it from its foundations.

Properly executed exercise looks like that dog is in the basic position, the dog gets forward command. Alone runs up to the obstacle after overcoming turns and returns by the same route back to the handler. When he comes to the handler sit down before him and by the command goes to the leg to the handler. Dog not forget to motivate, encourage and reward.

Aport with climbing over an inclined wall (A)

To this exercise, we can proceed after the dog has managed bringing objects, so aport, and after managing overcoming a sloping wall. Exercise is done, so that the handler and dog are standing in the basic position. The handler throws an aport so it fells down few steps behind the wall. He wait for a while (the dog should not move without a command), gives the command "forward aport" and shows with hand on the wall and aport. The dogs runs after the command to the wall, climb it, catch the aport and the handler gives than the command "back". Dogs is returning to the handler with aport and sit down before him. He waits a moment with the aport in mouth, handler gives command "drop" and dog gives the aport to handler. While is the aport carried, the dog doesn´t play with it. Followed by the command "to foot" goes the do to the leg of the handler. Price the dog for good job.

Special obstacles

By the training of obstacles, we should use also unconventional barriers. Whether toggle bridge or different types of walls. (foto 1,2,3 by wolfdog.org)

We may use also tunnels and climbing walls.
By a puppy we use by these elements also unusual noises or objects and use it to socialize.

When going through the pit or trench, respectively in practice long jump, we are starting with narrow ditch, so that we can overcome this with the dog. The maximum width of the trench is 3 m. But let us remember, that every time we start from simple and constantly praise the dog. Do not allow the dog slipped off,  or hurt, so he did not create a link - obstacle - the hurt. Use not only verbal praise, but especially by puppies treats (puppies should be old enough to jump!). As with other exercises, to overcome obstacles is doubly true that a dog should not be eaten, while jumping could cause stomach roll.
