Before a dogshow

This section is devoted mainly to those, who was not on a show in Slovakia, or don´t know ho to show a wolfdog.

Termines of shows

You can check the termines on our website or SKJ - these are only Slovakian shows. There are shows organized under the FCI. Therefore, our dog must be registred in one of the breeding books recognized by this organization.

Carefully read the entire calendar. The summary online entry pages for Slovakian shows are www.dogshow.sk and the www.onlinedogshows.sk. By every show you will find the entry close. They are normaly 3, while the third can be sometimes extended, but with every entry close near to the day of show, the entry fee is getting higher.

Before we fill the entry

Did we chose the right type of show? If you are a beginer and you are not sure about your abilities, it is good to start on a smaller show - regional. There is not such a concentration of animals and humans. Also the surrounding is more acceptable. Your breeder (if we meet him and is willing) can advise you. Even can also show your dog. You can also hire a professional in shows - a handler.

Will be your dog in good condition? Especially sporting dogs or females after pupps. It's up to us to take care of the nutrition and grooming, get the dog in show condition.

Entry

The termines of dogshow in Slovakia are available at www.skj.sk or by us in callendar.  We choose a termine. The online registration is at www.dogshow.sk and some of the shows are here www.onlinedogshows.sk

After registration we fill out the info about you and your dog, you will need scan of his pedigree. Remember, no possibility to eneter a puppy without pedigree created.

On the pages of the show you find the entry close dates and the priceing. Remember, the Slovakian national breeds are paying the half of the price - on Slovakian shows. But the system will count for you everything.

After the registration you recieve confirmation email with bank credits. You must pay for the show the same day. Or you choose a dirrect payment via internetbanking.

The statistics are available from 2nd closing date, sometimes are interactive, visible from first date.

Clothing for the handler

We should choose the right clothes. It should be comfortable. Color should be contrasting with the color of our dog. It is not good to be matched with the color of the dog. Black dog at a photo or in ring is nearly invisible in front of the handler in black clothes. It depends where and under what weather the exhibition is held. Important is the type of show. While on the regional show nobody will blame us for sportswear, for world dogshow we should be in  formal clothing. Important is elegant but comfortable sports shoes that do not endanger the health of the dog or its handler (dangerous for both are high heels). Clothing should have pockets so we can hide treats or small toy or bag for eventual elimination of "accidents". It is also possible to use a small bag for treats. We can not forget that we are showing a "dog" and so we have to count with paws or hair on our clothes. One must remember, however, show the dog and not yourself! Therefore, our clothing should not beat the dog.

Examples of suitable clothing - men 's jeans, shirts and the like. For women skirt, allowing sufficient movement, trousers, suit, sports elegance.

Example of inappropriate clothing - too provocative clothing for women, high heels, narrow short skirt, army trousers for men, too casual, sporty, or dirty clothes, ... However, it is a social event and not walk into the mountains.

If you do not want, you do not need to travel to the exhibition in the exhibition clothes, you can change clothes right there. Do not wear shoes you wear not often or new shoes, running in the ring can cause bruising. Also shoes that can slide. It must be something, in what we are flexible enough, we can comfortably run with the dog. In winter, the hall may not be heated, also think that it will be need also warmer clothes.

To wolfdogs is better a darker clothing, so the upperline is more vissible.

Very appropriate is sport and elegantly chosen clothing, worthy of showing on an events such as exhibition, but still comfortable for show.

Sporty and elegant clothing by men is elegant and still comfortable for showing in ring.

Miss obviously exposes herself and then the dog. Provocative clothing, neck and "bare belly" really do not belong on the show, but the disco... In the second figure, bit unlucky chosen clothes, coat or jacket that the dog can by trot jab to the head is not an optimal solution ...

Choosing a good collar and leash

On show is it not only about suitable clothes of handler, but also for the dog. An appropriately chosen collar and leash. The market has a wide variety of collars and leashes, but let's be honest, a dog showed on harness or gross collar and leash, which remembers the puppy era of the dog, do not look appetizing. As for the handler and the dog is preferable to wear something "more" than the normal walking day.

Special for shows are produced show leashes in many forms.

For the dog is basically not important which color you choose. Well looks a pale beige and black, or other colors. Pale is not disturbing. A little more expensive option is show guide, from solid metal, which it is appropriate for a dog with education, which runs properly, has no requirements to run and pull. Firstly, the thickness of leashes and collars should correspond to obedience. Therefore we choose thinner especially when we have controllable dog and thicker in dogs that tend to pull.

By handling, is a light leash very elegant and to this helps also a correct holding of the leash in handlers hand...

...we keep it rolled up in one hand, so that nothing unnecessary "hangs" next to the dog. The remainder length we ball in the hand, hand is down.

The dog can perform well, so that handler must only hold the collar in position and let loose leash released next to dog.

Leash and collar should be mainly to control the dog, its position should be natural and should not be flaunting neck and strangle. Correct adjustment of the length of the guide and its retention should be such, that the hand is next to the handlers side. Does not pull his hands in height. Prefer to shorten the leash tangled in hand and not hangs around the dog's head or having hands in height.

Inappropriate, respectively less good, are thick leather collars. While providing "security" in the control, show is still a bit of prestige and the dog must obey, its kind of trianing. Showleads are in any thickness, which retains much heavier dog, than is 40 kg wolfdog.

It is also not very suitable a too rough leash, it disturbs.

Inappropriate are chain collars, with large eyes. Not only they do not operate well, but also disrupt the hair and easy pull out...

...like here :)

Few other less suitable collars and leashes. The dog performs in all its glory and is not on a walk... A massive collar covers the fur around neck, which also creates an overall impression of a wolfy look.

Training before the show

For someone shows are fun, someone take them as great prestige. And for someone are a necessity because they need them for stud dog status. Ideally, the shows are fun for the owner and his dog. Always is it not so, and so must the owner somehow make it enjoyable for the dog - pay more attention to him, reward him with treats or play, for example, play with a ball. Exhibitions are also suitable for those who want to absolve a stud term or socialize. There gets used to a large number of people and dogs, and also strangers. If we decide to champion education, or we just go a few exhibitions necessary, should be our dog learn to behave in the show ring.

Teaching the dog to touch him

Training a dog begin in familiar and quiet place - in the yard or garden or in house. For puppies and temperament individuals is appropriate to start after a rich walk, then we do not have much to contend with him. First push back the lips - this is check of bite. Follow with the opening of the mouth - as if the judge controls the completeness of teeth. As we daily practice, dog gets used quickly - especially when you use reward. We can use the command "teeth" that the dog knows what we will do with it. Later, we can add a review of the entire body. Because on show, there is inspection of the entire body by some judges, some do not do it at all. Dog (male) must  let the judge control the testicles.

The dog has to get used to touching the parts of the body that are controlled not only by shows but also by youth presentation or bonitation, if necessary, by the vet. In the second figure is a joyful dog and enjoys the judge, but is in place to calm him down.

By the show is controlled bite and teeth. In males, the testes are checked.

Showing the dog in movement

While learning the dog run in show ring, you need to know, there are some figures, how to run. The dog is on left. Mostly judges use for presentation running in circle, down and back and triangle.  The dog must present himself, not jumping or biting you, growl on others,... The movement must be light, do not push his head too much high, like a swan. In walk is pace, in trot not.

Figure 1 - The dogs head is one line with topline, its sure OK, but he looks not so motivated. On second one, the dog is happy.

How it looks on the show - the dog learn to trot on different surfaces, in the halls  or some exhibitions are open air.

Training of proper show stand

The wolfdogs are show mainly in free stack. No need to do anything special. Just look, that the legs are not too far behind, so the back is down. Learn since a puppy to stand with all 4 paws down. Use treats and use a command to tell the dog, what you want.

The dogs stand free, without owners help. Free standing.

Left the dog is great exposed, the owner does not interfere with its line of body. The dog on the right is also exposed without assistance.

Dog focuses on a treat in the hand of the owner (the owner does not even have a treat, just knowing by gesticulation of hand, that it has to look). Standing next to the dog owner does not interfere with dogs stand.

We can also kneel to modify dogs stand. We can lift the tail at the root of that so its "bounced" from the body and is nicely carried high.

We can bring the dog in proper stand with forward step or two, or use your free hand.

Exposure two dogs wants a little extra exercise.

Less, but not infrequent phenomenon is, that while waiting in the ring, the dog makes it more comfortable. On the one hand it's great that it is so calm, that he has no problem to relax, but on the other hand, is showing. A sit is not terrible, but let's try to always keep the dog on the position like free standing - relaxed, if not in the exhibition stand. Inappropriate is a dog lie down, or even falling asleep. This really does not belong to the ring.
