Pickup day

Here is the day "D" and you will pick up your wolfdog puppy. At home everything is prepared for the arrival of a new family member.

It is best to go pick up the puppy on friday morning, take a day off in work (if it is not possible, at least you have the whole weekend to spend with the puppy). Pick up day is from 7 weeks of age (for export after rabies vaccination for most countries). Earlier is it not recommended because its time of imprinting. The dog gets to know their relatives and creates a relationship with them. Late pick up will be harder for socialization, especially by wolfdog (in puberty or later). You already know, that he will have with his master a solid relationship, acts like he was learned, has negative and positive experience. It is better if you learn and educate the dog yourself, as by someone else. It can go good, dog learns many lessons, but many things can go wrong and eliminating bad habits learned in this period, is a very difficult journey. If the breeder push you to take the puppy early, in 5 weeks, its sounds like he wants to sell the pupps as soon as possible. Think about it, if such a approach is good, if such breeder will help you in future, after sell, if he does not matter the healthy imprinting time and socialization with mom and siblings. In this time is his work on place, to socialize and prepare the pupps for you, the new owners!

How check the puppy?
When you come to the breeder to pick up the puppy, will be the atmosphere a bit sad for him. One of his babies will leave. The pick up is not only about taking the pupp, but also to fill the sales contract and the most, say goodbye to the puppy.

You will sign the contract, take the goodies for the pupps and gifts, let the pupp play last time with siblings and mom. Will take about 2-3 hours. Count with it. After this time is the puppy tired, walked enough and can travel.

Before you take the pupp, make final check.

The breeder will give you puppy clean (he knows, the puppy will travel to new home, so will prepare him for this, it will be not dirty from mud or pee!), can have typical puppy smell, but can not small from dirt or pee. It is the breeders job. The puppy has clean, healthy coat, good and high quality looking, without white marks, except the chest and mask. The eyes are clear, without dirt, redness,... The teeth are already grown up, the breeder will show you the bite. If the bite is incorrect, the breeder will tell you and write this in the contract too. The gums are without blood. Ears are up, but must not be. They will stand up later. But are always clear. On paws are claws, black or with minimum white. The pads black. The dew claws are down - from the hind legs. If there were dew claws, the breeder should tell you. Its done in first days of life. The belly is full, without making noices. By pee or poo, there is no blood and the excrements are firm. The tail is firm, without brakes. The puppy is temperamental, open, comunicative. Can bite, is not agresivity. Can not be shy, agressive against you or the breeder.

With your puppy you get from breeder
certificate of origin - export pedigree (if its still not done, ask for termine - my opinion is, that every breeder can give the pedigree by pick up!), in time of 7 weeks of age, the breeder can have a document about export pedigree in progress.

International Certificate of Vaccination (Europass)

instructions how to take care for puppy

 sales contract

puppy will be vaccinated, dewormed (these will be recorded in the EU's Pass)

puppy will have a chip

possibility at any time ask breeder a question, ask for help

This should be a minimum of any breeder... but the reality may be different

The way home

It is best to go for a puppy in the morning, so is enough time for him to get know you and your new home. Tell the breeder (he should know) in advance, if traveling by car or plane, not to feed the puppy, could vomit. Most puppies will come sick of traveling, it's a stressful situation for them and they can vomit (but not necessarily the rule). At home, prepare transport basket, crate, box or cloth in which transport the puppy. The most time the puppy lies down and sleeps in the car.

But to be honest a box is not so good, since the puppy will be not happy to be closed somewhere. So the best is to be in the car without it - safe in someone's hands. It is better if you go for the puppy in pair. One of you take puppy in and be with him during the trip, talk to him,... If the trip is longer, take a bowl of water, during the journey stop and let the puppy empty (puppy should withstand continuous path approximately one to two hours, but it is better to take time to stop, than have a "accident" in the car. It is more likely that your puppy sleeps the whole journey). Still, walk him only on a leash, so he can not run away. As soon as possible, preferably on the way home, visit your vet to check the puppy. He will check the EU pass, will tell you the next termine for visit him for vaccinations or deworming, he will look at the pupp if its really healthy.

First day in new home

The way home in a car or plane, is for a small puppy a stressful situation. Perhaps it will get sick and should not be giving food by arriving. Some pupps may not have problems, but be prepared if so.

A new household member will search for his family. In the first hours in new home, should move around the puppy only you and the nearest members, do not let your family and especially children welcome too rush, it could be scared. Calm and relaxed, show him rooms in your home, where he will have access. If somewhere will be not allowed, do not show him the place at all. Introduce him his bowl with water, toys, his place to sleep. It is possible that the dog gets diarrhea, so prepare if you live in an apartment, newspaper before you arrive.

Gradually show him members of your household. If you have a garden show it too. If you already have one dog, learn them know very carefully at a neutral location, preferably such place, that your old dog do not knows. Pay more attention to the old dog, more than usual, can start to be jealous. When the puppy calm down, you can try to give him food, that you have from breeder as a sample. Give it about 1/3 ration, he is used to. Unnecessarily do not take your puppy on your hands, but try to take it out and right from the first minute educate, socialize. Puppy will empty every two hours (and often) when emptied outside, praise him properly, but if he had an accident inside, don´t punish him, but let him know, that you are not satisfied, for example. command "no".

Nothing leave after arriving of puppy, maybe it's not time for it, prepare all necessary things before. Dish, collar, leash, nest, toys, medical kit and the kennel (pen)...

The first night
Probably it will be a very sleepless night. Get ready for the first night with the puppy. From the breeder you bring a toy or something with smell of the mother and the breeders home and give it the puppy to bed. It can be wrapped around hot water bottles - the warm of mother. Go to the new home will be less stressful. Not recommended is to take the puppy to bed, but put place for sleep close to it. Puppy can cry and calling his mother and family. If you play during the day and let him explore new, sleeps for a long time in a row. But if cry, calm and gently tell him, everything is OK. Do not take him out of bed when crying, could get used to cry and you arrive and rescue him. The puppy's personality is unique and how many nights you will not sleep, is very individual. Often is that wakes you up for walking... The pupp changes position during the night few times and find a place that suits him the most. Will try to have fun, ask out for a walk, but most will sleep when it sufficiently get tired during the day. This comes out of age of the puppy too. Something else is a 7 weeks old pupp, something a 3,5 months old pupp or a puppy taken too early - 5 weeks from a puppy mill.
Especially if the dog will live in an apartment, cage or pen is the perfect solution, but also get used to kennel has a similar procedure. This is not a cruel method, as many believe. Puppy is protected against injury during your absence. No cage shall serve as a punishment or a place to close the dog for hours or when you have enough of him. Puppy should be closed only to necessary long time, it must be get used to the dog crate very slowly.

Getting started so, that we leave the cage open so the puppy can go in and come out as it wants, let it there a treat or toy. We can show him the place, when he wants to sleep, but never with pressure. We leave the door open. Do not let the dog out when crying, wait until he calms down. He gets really quick to know, when he cries, you come and let him out. Remember to praise your puppy when it was good and quiet.

Cage or pen should be a place to rest, so let the puppy rest and do not disturb him.

Acquiring is different. Begin with short periods. Get the puppy tired and bring him into the cage with the command "place" and if it stays and does not protest, praise him. After several tries, try for a short time close it. When is the puppy quiet, open it and price him. In the first experiments make the cage closed for about 2-5 minutes and stay in the room. Do some normal activities and ignore your puppy. Nothing extraordinary happens. Then release the puppy, as if nothing happened. Repeat the procedure, but extend the time to 10 minutes, but still stay in the same room. This period extended up to 30 minutes. Repeat the exercise several times a day. Then proceed with the next step, so after closing the cage go to another room. Again, leave in the first 5 minutes and than to more and more minutes. Do exercise slowly, use a command and praise the dog after loose him out. Use the time when the puppy wants to sleep. Never close the dog in a cage for punishment, do not allow he gets afraid of the cage, it must be his own place to sleep and have peace.

First days at home

So you have your small wolf at home. The question is - what to do with him next? First days are full of visits, but what to do next? Ideal is to learn and educate him the first days:

where is his place and where to sleep

learn regularly to pee and ask for it

learn regularly to eat

on walks get used to noices, humans, animals,...

have choosen trainings place and went there for lesons, get used for trainings and try to teach the tricks also at home

In this age is the most important socialisation and showing the puppy what is awaited from him and what is prohibited. Get to situations, where you can price the puppy and must not punish him. Positive approach is the best. In relationship with puppy, so in his faster understanding of what we want from him.

The life with a puppy and later with young one is about nerves :) Be prepared for diverse problems and with it connected invested time and his character and socialisation. Later, you will be happy you did it and it commes back to you as great educated dog. Do not let the puppy isolated at home. You must go out with him, for walks, socialization.

The biggiest issue is, how to tire a puppy, because you can not walk him for hours. It is desired to tire his head. You do it with walks and socialisation together. Travel with bus or visit shopping centres. Great is games in rain or snow. Have many treats prepared. He should use his head with learning new tricks. Give paws, bringing things, nosework,... Great are toys, that he can chew, kong for example. You can give cheese in it. Or give in a plastic bottle few treats and the pupp should get them out. Get tire a puppy is hard, since you can not make it with kilometers walking, is bad for the hips.

Usual problems with a puppy

Each puppy is different and with each you will learn something different. But nevertheless, a few things are common for wolfdogs. Once get used to new home, which for some is usually one day or week for some, become established, they show their true nature. A fading is slow, gradual. Many owners can not handle this, have no patience and puppies or young dogs, unfortunately, let for adoption or most sad - put down.

Common is for puppies and young dogs in particular:

Sleep and activity - a small puppy alternates sleep and activity very often. Puppy mostly asleep, but then it will come a time of increased activity and required your attention. Your puppy needs to use its energy, obtained by sleep. It is clear that most of us go to work and can not be with dog or puppy his whole life. So it must stay itself for a while. Therefore, it is ideal if you are going somewhere, get the dog tired by playing, or use his head. Goes to sleep. Íf you have a second dog, its sure easier, and he will "help" with the puppy. Puppies activity lies in the fact, that after wake up needs to pee, than play, bite, run a bit, practice his skills by some commands, walk a bit and socialize too... then when it's time, to feed and again sleep. Its up on you to create activity for puppy, but remember that the physical work can not be that much. Focus more on the mental - learning through play - exercise. If the puppy sleeps, let it sleep, do not wake him up because someone wants to see him, it need time to sleep as every kid and if you do not let him rest, you can await problems. And how much can a puppy walk? Long walks leave for future, you can not take small puppy hiking. Just a bit and short, but more times a day. The puppy don´t knows how much it can walk, run with others, can over do it and limb. It is up on you to stop him.

Walking a puppy - small puppy has definitely other needs than young or adult dog in walking. Other thing is emptying. Be aware, that your puppy is a baby, that has not fully developed sphincters and is empting after waking up, after game, after feeding,... Warning signal is circling in one place and search for "place" for pee or poop. If the dog lives outside, it more or less does not matter where to do it. It is different in apartment. Take puppy out regularly, even if its not looking, he wants to pee! Ideal if we can capture the moment before emptying. Puppy price if pee outside, and comment bit badly when did inside. We never punish. Puppy can do nothing against it. Some puppies will pee inside even if we were two hours out, straight on the floor of your apartment after arrival. We need have patience, it takes a really long time. But it is worth to praise, motivate and regular frequency of walking, by young puppies definitely regular "Pee" walkings (pee, sniff and home). It's also useful command "Pee-pee" or similar. Your puppy will quickly learn to pee on command. They will learn what is expected.

Biting - is a big issue, because all CsW puppies incredibly bite and somehow it does not stop with them, and takes a long time. What is worse, bite master, visits, legs, arms... The new owners are because of this unhappy and do not know what to do. Therefore, prepare yourself for the fact, that wolfdogs bit a lot also in adult, though a little different way, but it's a term of friendship. Beware - biting and biting can be different! Puppy instead of a hand and touch take everything in mouth. Often it takes our hand into mouth. But then, when they start to grow the teeth, it is rather to release the loose teeth and help with pain, massage. Therefore, the intensity increases. It is ideal to give at this time puppy toys that help to massage the gums. There are rubber toys and the like (mind the ideal size for your puppy). Ideal is apple or carrot or the like food. Biting the hands and feet, and our shoes is uncomfortable and painful, and your legs will resemble hand of workers. In this case, it must be considered in mind, that the puppy naturally manifests itself its own nature. Here you should correct and guide him. If your puppy starts to bite painfully your hand, you must literally give him toy in its mouth and allow biting only "his" and leading it to do it. Do not let a problem with biting grew to such proportions, that the puppy bites you in blood! You can not allow this! If the biting is painful, use voice to tell the pupp it is. The puppy also makes noice, when is something painful... If the game is already so intense, that the puppy can not calm down and goes to extremes, immediately give the command "NO" or "STOP" and end the game with going away and  ignore the puppy. "Famous" tumbling, and growling and the like extremes definitely do not belong to puppies. Especially not for biting. Stretched on neck and other punishment puppy support in defending, and this habit - to address acts of violence - will learn to use towards others. To play with bite is not a good game, play with it only with toys and like training. Biting in your hands should be tabu!

Puppy and small kids - i have a lot of mails from parents of small children, that they want a csw puppy for the kids (in different age) or want the csw as a family dog. Yes, a csw is a family dog too, but its not a labrador and never will be!!! The puppy is temperamental, full of energy and not every puppy fits in a family with kids! A good breeder will tell you and will help to choose the right puppy, suitable. If he does not have such puppy, will not sell you one! Prepare, that your kid WILL have some bites, scratches and the like, the puppy will bite him and will not understand, that the kid is not suitable toy. You must explain it more times, how to behave against children. In puberty or adult age, of course, can be a great family dog and member, but in puppy age is critical. So, if you do not take this, that the kids will have small injuries, you can not explain the dog not to do it, have patience, have not so much time to learn it the pupp and the kids how to play with the dog, do not take csw. No, its not suitable to be a mother with a baby and have a puppy, when you are not a family, where the dog is a stabile member of family, not toy.

The howling, yelping and other noises - Wolfdogs are monkeys. These sounds, which can be issued are really funny, but the fun ends at half past four in the morning, when they howl, or in the morning when you leave for work, and they cry to call you back. Barking and howling is often also a problem to re-sell the dog because of the neighbors. Therefore thus wolfdog owners search houses without neighbors :) So the dogs can howl or cry as they wish. This issue is based on loneliness and you can read about it on our pages. In this case, this is the biggest negative to have dog in the apartment.

Escapes - Wolfdogs run away because his master leaves him alone, or boredom, or there is a female in heat. If its any of these and even if few people will say its cruel, I will write this: proper fencing, especially pens, solid and secure is simply necessary. Only a very small percentage of the wolfdogs (I know only two) remain on the yeard, when master goes to work for eight hours. Safe and functional pen is basic. Definitely with solid metal, not wood that can be bitten through. Same for roof - must be fixed. The dog can climb over, burrow almost anything. The proper home for wolfdog is described on our pages too.

Leaving alone - also related to escape, sounding, all this comes with the leaving of the CSW puppy alone. A pen or cage is needed where the puppy will be placed during your absence, so he will not hurt himself or destroy anything valuable. Anyway, each puppy has a problem with loneliness and must lead him to remain alone since puppy. Do not leave it until later when it's older. Believe, it is almost impossible. Prepare for filming, cry, destruction, climbing, biting and protests. The puppy is very bad at beginning. But, you can teach him, that when you go, you will return, it has time to relax and after your return, you will have fun again and will be in your company. We have a separate chapter about this on our pages.

Wild behavior by the game, welcome, ... - puppy is active, temperamental, it is not a moloss. And so its emotions and energy concentrate in the "uncontrolled" missile. As a puppy, you have to teach him how to behave, that the energy and joy may be discharged not to you and members of the household, but to other activities. As a CSW owner you will become accustomed to this behavior, but your visits or passers-by on a trip may not be excited by the fact, that such a big dog jumps into his face, or that he does not know where the limits are and starts to over do it. First of all, teach the puppy to calm and be quiet, especially when welcoming and "have fun" with him - yes, it does take time, wants patience and it will not happen right away. The puppy or the young dog will jump, welcome you, it may not help to set your leg before you as a shield, push him a toy into the mouth, so he bites in it and not you by welcoming... Teach the puppy a peaceful behavior from the young age. Also, the games have their limits and do not allow them to go to extremes. From such a state, the state that he "no longer knows what to do with himself" is then difficult to get calm down. A game or any activity where you can see, that it is already over the border immediately stop. Especially be calm and teach your puppy, be patient. Honestly, the removal of welcome and stormy behavior is not always 100%, but it can be corrected.

Aggressive and dominant behavior by puppies - is definitely something different when is dominant, aggressive male weighing 40 kg, than a cute 2-month old puppy. Aggression and dominance in adulthood have their own chapters on our pages. Now let's talk about the natural dominance in puppies, finding a position within the family and the various manifestations, especially in a game or while eating. Example - puppy has dinner - meat, bones, vegetables. Give him bowl and it begins to eat. But you noticed you must move the bowl or that in the bowl is something that does not belong there. But puppy defends his chow and is growling at you, showing teeth, or even would bite you. In the first place - from the early days teach your puppy, that you give food and has no reason to defend it. This appeal goes to anyone with a "normal" thinking, not practice "preventive" removing of food, as some owners do. The dog will be stressed that he will not get the food and the more it will guard it. Give your puppy a bowl of food and before finishing eating add to it a bit more. Casually, calm without emotions. Feed him out of hand. Alternatively, you sit down, side by side to the bowl and thus wait until the dog finishes eating. Many do not really have a problem, but a couple of puppies are "machos", who want to defend food. You need to show them, that you let him eat and even when you touch the food, you want to add more. If really the puppy will be aggressive while eating, say NO and take the food away. Start feeding him from hand and slowly teach him that as soon as he growls, he will not get the food. With young dogs before eating you can perform commands, that he knows and you reward him for that with food. Never, however, do not give the dog chow, if while you holding the bowl growls, is wild, jumping on you,... Wait until calm down and give it to him. Even if it takes hour. Regularly walk around him when he eats, talk to him, what a great food he has and leave calm. Puppy learns, that he has no reason to protect food from others.

Resist - the puppy will test you, sooner or later, when he sets up at home, he starts to have bigger ambitions and will try if you really hold your borders. Growling by closing in the pen, not coming at recall and stay few maters before you. Growling or bite during handling, as bringing in sit or take on hands. Protests. It will come sooner or later. You have to prepare for the test. Dominate behavior comment with "NO" and train with your puppy daily manipulation, touching,... The puppy must obey! Every day, in any circumstances, it does not matter if your grandmother wants he can stay on the couch, if you do not want it, that's not going to happen. Boundaries must be given from the first day to the last. Manipulate with the dog calm, not with pressure, always with the command first - eg. balls, teeth, sit down, and then go on to act. The dog will know what to do. After handling, a reward always comes. Always! It is not just a treat, the reward is also a pet time, and especially a nice word - "soooo its goood boyyyyy". Enforcing something is difficult by a puppy, especially if it is, for example, to stop howling, or to stop destroy. It wants to stop the negative action as soon as it stops rewarding and tells how smart it is. The period of resist comes somewhere in puberty, around the 7th month, but it will come, sooner or later. Whether in a larger or smaller scale, it depends on the owner, how is he educating the puppy, how he lead him to held the rules and how much he worked with the puppy.

Destruction - yes, puppies destroy things. Dot. BUT! It depends mostly on you, what they ruin - on your wits, patience. The puppy will bite, scratch, digg, spread things. It is necessary to prepare in advance and have safe the shoes, cables, prepared yard. Puppy has to have his own toys, with which to play and which can be destroyed. As soon it begins to destroy something that can not, come with command NO and take the thing away. Give in your puppy's mouth his toy, with which can play. Prepare an enormous amount of patience and nerves. Even if you have not planned a new hole in a beautiful grass, it is possible that will appear. You have nice flowers, but can be destroyed in a moment. Puppy is looking for fun and getting to know surroundings. It is up to you to play with him, otherwise will find itself a game. To ensure that during your absence, or time, it can not be under the supervision, is great a fence, cage or pen that is mainly for puppy a shelter a safe area where can not hurt himself.

Hunting - hunting of adult dog is another story and we have a separate chapter on our pages. Hunting attempts of puppies are often seen as "innocent" and not "bad". This is because it is still not fast enough to catch up with their prey. But they grow... Hens, rabbits, cats, pheasants,... and not only yours, but also the neighbors. Already the first impulses to hunt must be stopped and corrected, otherwise it may turn into a real problem. Puppy become familiar with cat may not be a problem if you have a good foundation from breeder, but the breeder can not have a farm complete with all the wildlife animals and some of the animals you'll just have to accustom to the puppy by yourself. This means a gradual socializing and correcting and a total NO for hunting. Command NO pronounce clear, understandable and with a bad facial expression. For every good behavior praise and use treats. From my own experience: I pushed Akia into accepting cats at home from the first day, but once she was enough fast, she hunted them. And is hunting until today. Some people use electric collars. Gunner unlike Akia I can re-call from the hunt, even if he already runs away, but he also had to "mature" this stage.
